The Mede @ Nelson Close
The Mede was created to provide a day care facility for people living with Dementia in the local community. We are located in Topsham, Devon providing the perfect setting for our activity days.
Activity Days at Nelson Close
Although there is no cure for memory loss, deterioration can be slowed down through the use of trusted methods.
Activity days at Nelson Close are run by Occupational Therapists and volunteers with a high staff ratio. There is usually a lack of facilities for people when they are first diagnosed, which is exactly the time when activity and stimulation is required. Our main priority is to treat the members with dignity and tailor the sessions to their individual requirements. This includes visits to our beach hut, our allotment, local farms and sites of interests. We enjoy regular local visitors who share their talents to entertain or even teach the members new skills. For example our celebrity chef Orlando, a bagpiper and the owner of a local cheese shop to name a few!
Visit our facebook page for up-to-date photos of our sessions and trips out.

The sessions are based on the principles of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy – an alternative to medication. It’s simple, effective and good fun. Its evidence based and recommended by NICE. The key principles are:
No testing - stimulate discussion using opinions and feelings
Using reality orientation subtly and sensitively
Consistently ran – helping to orientate and create a familiar environment
Getting to know members and provide activities that are suitable and important
Focusing on strengths rather than limitations – all are encouraged to keep a hand in everyday tasks as well as trying something new
Full of fun – members enjoy their time with us and help feel stimulated and supported and have a good time
